The General Staff Reconnaissance Unit 269, or the Sayeret Matkal (סיירת מטכ״ל) is the special reconnaissance unit of the Israeli Special Operations Branch and the General Staff. "The Unit", as it is usually referred to, is the prime special forces unit of the Israel Defense Forces (IDF), similar in nature to the US Navy Seals, the US Army Delta Force, the UK Special Air Service (SAS), and other such special intelligence and rapid strike forces. The Sayeret Matkal is both a field intelligence-gathering unit, capable of conducting deep reconnaissance behind enemy lines, and the main Israeli counter-terrorism and hostage rescue force specializing in missions beyond Israel's borders.
